We just installed a new 120gig HD. it is set for the master device on the primary IDE controller. The original 15gig is set as the slave device on the primary IDE controller. There is also a CD as the primary device on the secondary IDE controller. We installed XP pro and set the entire 120gig as one partition. it all seemed to be ok until the reboot. XP has the the 120gig drive as drive letter E:, the CD rom as D: and the unformatted 15gig drive as C:. How do we make the 120gig drive to be C:?

Start, Run, diskmgmt.msc

Right click on the 15Gb drive and temporarily change it to x or something. Then do the same with the 120Gb drive changing it to C. Follow this proceedure until they're set up the way you want it. Note that changing the drive letter of the CD rom could mess up any existing shortcuts that point to the CD rom as D:

To keep this from happening again, I think you need to set the 120 GB drive as active, not the 15gb (if you did). As for fixing it. If you change the drive letter that XP and other programs were installed on, they MAY give you problems afterwards. They still might try to access the old drive letter.... Good luck!

HOW TO: Change Drive Letter Assignments in Windows XP (Q307844)

"Changing the drive letter of the system volume or the boot volume is not inherent to Disk Management.
Many MS-DOS-based and Windows-based programs make references to a specific drive letter (for example, environment variables). If you modify the drive letter, these programs may not function correctly."

Do a search in this Forum for Drive Letter.

I'd just reinstall XP on 120GB drive with 15Gb drive disconnected (delete & create new partition). You say its not formatted - but XP has assigned it as C: (so is it really not formatted - must have at least a partition created on it).

Playing with system drive letter is asking for trouble.
