Hi,
I'm very new to networking and have most probably
not read/understood everything - so mea culpa in advance ;)

My Hardware is as follows:
PC1 - Win2000 pro
AT2500 PCI NIC
PC2 - Win XP home (connected to internet via DSL AT-AR215 modem) network via Onboard Intel NIC
PC3(to be included in the future) - Linux router (this PC is not used at the moment but I include it in case
anyone has any comment regarding impact of its inclusion).

What I want to do at the moment is simply connect PC1 and PC2 via cross connect cable / share files (to copy files etc for backup).

I have done the config as well as I know and get the following result after I do "ipconfig" on each PC and use the respective IP addresses:

PC1 ping -> PC1 OK
-> PC2 timeout

PC2 ping -> PC1 OK
-> PC2 timeout

Any hints what mistake I'm making ?(saw faq779-1394
but can't get past the "ping" step.)
(BTW, I'm not clear on what the Gateway in this case is
and whether I should just use some fixed IP addresses)
I have included the ipconfig/all info below (with some changes in nos ;))

The XP Home isn't getting an IP address. The 169.254.x.x range is the autoconfigure range used by Win2K/XP when they can't get one from a DHCP server.

To get around this, either give them a fixed address from one of the private ranges (192.168.x.x, 172.16.x.x or 10.x.x.x) with only one address different.

Alternatively, put a DHCP server on your Linux box and use this as the gateway to the LAN connection.

In fact, make that both machines have autoconfigure addresses.
Do you have a hub or switch that you could connect them to, then get everything running?
