From the big red N on the taskbar, (right mouse) I choose Netware Utilities ---> Netware Copy to back up files. This seems to copy open files quite happily like Foxpro and MS Access databases, but I can only use this manually. Can this be automated to run at a preselected time of day? Some users may leave files open.

You could use the DOS based NCOPY.EXE and schedule it as a task on your Workstation? Alternatively, there are utilies sych as NWCOPY and 2nd Copy 2000 that will do the job but they are licensed.
