New hard drive(will be clean install). Have used Vista Ultimate 32 and it's OK but it's not 64. Will 64 run all 32 and more(64), as it should? Don't need dual boot because I have XP Pro on another computer. So which is best to use? Which will be more useful in the future? Can I dual boot both 32 and 64? What does experiance dictate?

If all the apps and drivers that you need to use are 64bit then use the 64bit OS. If not then you'll need to check into how well they run on a 64bit OS compaired to a 32bit OS and decide from there.

As I use SQL Server, Office, VPN and RDP I can use Vista 64bit without issue as all those apps have 64bit editions and my hardware has 64bit drivers.

I started on 64 bit, but I have some older apps (16 bit I think) which won't run on 64 bit, so have created a 32 bit dual boot installation which i use 90% of the time. Have just made it a triple boot, with XP, as XP runs much better on this machine, and I still prefer it! (though honestly I'll stick with vista 32-bit unless it becomes impossible). Have had a recent problem running vmware on 32 bit vista (just started freezing the whole machine), so that's only on 64 bit now. The whole ediface is hardly convenient! - a year ago I thought I'd be able to run just vista 64 bit, no (serious) problems. More fool me.

Doesn't 64-bit Vista also omit the AppCompat shims for legacy (non Vista-aware) 64-bit applications? This could mean some 64-bit XP programs won't even work there.

I'm pretty sure 32-bit processes get virtualization and other shims applied though, at least prior to SP1.

I Dual Boot both 64 and 32 versions of Vista. I find that the x86 (32) version is the more reliable and use that most of the time, perhaps because my machine is based on Intel and not AMD.

If the operating system is 64bit it will be able to run 32bit (x86) applications (if they install OK) and read their files or other 32bit files. You will have two Program Files folders, one for 64bit applications, and one for x86 applications. Vista will install the programs into the appropriate folder. Similarly you will have two System folders, System32 and SysWOW64. All Windows Updates must be for the 64bit operating system however.
