I am currently using win nt4.0, we have two location, our main location have all the server and location2 is connected through a data T1. The speed of the data point to point is 1.5MB symetric. right now, if users try to get file from the file server (main location), it is very slow. and it is even slower if they want to save the file.
what is a good way to configure my win nt 4.0 file server at my main location so that user can access file server faster?

any help is greatly appreciated.

try right click network netboorhood on the file server. Go to services. Select the server service and choose properties. Place the radio button on 'Maximize throughtput for file sharing'. You may have to reboot.....Good luck, as this should speed up file access 2-3 times.

Thanks for your reply, I check my server, and it did have "Maximize throughput for file sharing" check. Is there anything else I should check, I've been having this problem for so long. Thanks in advance for helping.

What else uses the T1 (voice, ipx, telephony, how much other data is being passed)? (Try moving files during off hours to see if average usage is playing a part in the delay).

How big are the file that users are trying to access back and forth?

If you ping -t across the T1 (from the main server to a PC, and then from PC to the main server) what is your average speed for both tests?

Check your routers and switches for collisions. You may have some bad ports, hardware, or some other evil thing happening between equipment.

I have voice, data, internet going through this data t1.
is this why it's slow on the remote site?

Hi KimVong,

Try using Data and Internet on ur T1 line and then check. I thing u will definitely see good changes in the performance.

Kimvong,

Try monitoring your speed (file transfer, internet download) at a time when you know no-one else will be using and again when people are using. If the speed is very different, you have a bandwidth issue. If you have any programming knowledge you can you MRTG to monitor your T1. Or log into you your Routers at regular intervals and start tracking usage (input/output bytes).

Before you can finger NT definitively, eliminate traffic on your line as a variable.
