windows ME
after my system crashes i get an error when it starts up

scandskw
scandskw has caused an error in dskmaint.dll
scandskw will now close

what is the issue here.

I'ld make yourself a me dos boot disk. You might simply need to reextract the dskmaint.dll file. Not sure if me has the system file checker, or if you need to do it through dos.

You can also just turn off scandisk from running after a crash, by editing the msdos.sys file. Remove the read only attribute, reboot to dos off the floppy, edit msdos.sys. Set autoscan = 1 to autoscan = 0.

Some people who are scandisk fans say this is bad, but I do it all the time. If you really want to reextract this file, copy your win9x folder off the me cdrom to your c: drive, and post back.

P.S. Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

To resolve this problem, extract a new copy of the Dskmaint.dll file from the Plus_2.cab file. To do so, follow these steps:
Restart your computer in MS-DOS mode.
Change to the Windows\System directory.
Type the following line at the MS-DOS command prompt
extract <drive>:\plus_2.cab dskmaint.dll

where <drive> is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive containing the Microsoft Plus! CD-ROM, or of the floppy disk drive containing disk 2 of the original Microsoft Plus! disks.
Restart your computer normally.

basement131,

If faults is "corruption file", just to make sure, you better extract both files scandskw.exe and dskmaint.dll.

The easiest way to extract is from windows.

Scandskw.exe:
-------------
- Open explorer, go to folder C:\Windows\Options\Install
- Double click on file WIN_17.CAB
- Find scandskw.exe, right click on it, extract to C:\Windows

Dskmaint.dll:
-------------
- Open explorer, go to folder C:\Windows\Options\Install
- Double click on file PRECOPY1.CAB
- Find dskmaint.dll, right click on it, extract to C:\Windows\System

Restart the system.
Hope it works
