Hi,

I have exact the same problem as Anubis3000 (Programmer) which he has posted on 8 Dec 05 19:52

I have a problem with windows explorer. My computer boots normally, but when I login, windows explorer will not start; I just see a blank screen with the desktop background. When I go to windows task manager, and go to file -> new task and type "explorer", it will start for a second (I can see the task bar, etc.) but then it shuts down, and I am left with a blank screen. In addition, when I go to file -> new task and type "control panel" the control panel opens for a second and closes.

It could be spyware, but I am unsure as to how to fix. I have already scanned the hardrive by plugging it in to another computer, and did not discover any viruses.

Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have access via Safe Mode, or in Normal Mode with a different user?

You could also try ChkDsk /r from the Recovery Console or from the GUI in Safe Mode.

How to install and use the Recovery Console in Windows XP

An easy to follow recovery console description when unable to start computer due to corrupt registry.

This is a layman's version of Q307545 in simple language.

What do you have in the registry location mentioned here?

regedit.exe instead of Explorer.exe

I just run chkdsk /r and still waiting until its finished.

Earlier I have try to fix it by renaming the file shdocvw.dll shdocvw.old (suggestion Microsoft) but after I reboot the system and logon again the system told me that he need this file called shdocvw.dll to run explorer.exe
This solution is for Win2000 and i am using XPprofSP2.

I think the registry is corrupt because things like shell=explorer was missing for example.

Microsoft does not go around and update every KB with each new version of Windows. What is referred to in that is perfectly applicable for XP SP2.

Since you are comfortable mounting the drive elsewhere, on this different host computer download Ewido trial, install it, update the definitions, and run it against your hard disk:

should be able to restore an older clean registry.

Do you have any Safe Mode access or if you have some Command Prompt you can try System Restore and restore a clean registry that way?
