Win 98 get's a black screen

I can boot up into a win 98 that was hi-jacked with ads software. but after running, ad-aware, spybot and cwshredder and cleaning everything out, the system woon't stay up. Basically it'll stay on for 5 minutes or so and then go into a blank screen as if going to a screen saver. I set the screen saver to 15 minutes and it still happens. No matter what you do, the desktop doesn't come back and i have to manually shut down the machine and turn it on again. Does anyone know what's happening and how to fix it? Also how do i start up in safe mode to see if it happens there?

Tap the F8 key just before the Windows splash screen boots.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

Did you try runing msconfig to see if there are any startup items that should be there. Maybe there is a program runing the kills you at 5 min.
