WIN 98 CUSTOMER SERVICE PACK??????

THIS IS STUPID...I KNOW THIS AND I APOLIGIZE. I DID A CLEAN INSTALL OF WIN 98.( FORMER M E USER). DOES THE CUSTOMER SERVICE PACK THAT IS AVAILABLE TO UPGRADE THIS OS WORK? IS IT USEFUL AND RECOMMENDED BY THE "EXPERTS". I`M SCARED TO INSTALL IT AND I WAS HOPING TO GET A LITTLE GUIDANCE HERE. I`VE BEEN HAPPY W/WIN 98 SINCE I DOWNGRADE FROM WIN ME AND JUST DONT WANT TO SCREW IT UP. SO..., BTW , THIS IS 2ND POST ON SAME SUBJECT. NO REPONSES 1ST TIME DUMDOG

So far as I know it does what it is supposed to. Primarily resolve some Y2K issues. But it also has some system and security mods.
I was lucky and stayed with 95 until SE was available. Ed Fair

Windows 98 first edition or SE?? If you have Windows 98 basic first edition, the service pack 1 is only available on CD from Microsoft and it will cost you $5 shipping plus tax. (They say it is free, but the shipping is making them rich.) It is safe to install. It fixes some bugs and if you have a later version of Internet Explorer than 4.0, it will not install any of the IE updates. It tells you all this on the Windows Update page. It used to be a free download, but not any more. If you have Windows 98SE there is a CD for those updates, but it is $19 plus tax and shipping.

During the install it may tell you a file on your computer is newer than one on the CD--just keep the newer file. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....."
