I am currently running Win98 se on an un-partitioned harddrive. I want to run XP pro but don't want to lose 98.

I have slaved a second (empty) harddrive and was wondering if i could use that to install XP on and if so what i need to be aware of?

Please help

It's possible to do...depending on if your BIOS setup will allow to select which specific hard drive you want to boot to. You would need to set it to boot to the secondary hard drive first. What I would recommend first is to get a set of XP pro boot disks. You can pick them up from this website:

If your BIOS doesn't support that function, you can pick up partition management programs pretty cheap nowadays.

Cool, thnx alot :)

What would i need to do if i wanted dos to prompt which OS i wanted on startup.....i've seen this on partitioned hardrives with multiple OS's but i have no idea when it comes to separate drives ???

I will download those boot disks, they seem cool...thnx again :)

When it actually comes to installing XP Pro....do i just stick the disk in while is 98 is still running and choose my empty harddrive as the destination for the installation or do i need to do something more tricky?

Any help would make me very happy :)

If you had a partition management program you could put both operating systems one drive. Since it would be two separate drives, make sure you have the BIOS set to boot to the second hard drive. You will want your computer to boot to the floppy drive first and then the second hard drive. Once that is set, restart the computer and put your first boot disk in and follow the instructions.

Cheers again Enk.

So just change the boot sequence in bios to floppy first, then my second drive......pop the XP disk in and do a normal installation using the XP boot disks if necsassary?

:)
