has anyone found an answer to the lackof individual sizing windows? I cannot understand why MS would remove that feature? every window I open now mimics the one before it. there appears to be no memory of the windows I opened before. does anyone know or heard if MS will address this?

Hi

I'm not sure I get what you mean?

I just tested this opening windows for Microsoft Word and Open Office writer.

Both windows opened in whatever config they were when I closed them.

I made a horizontal window for Word and a Vertical window for Writer.

Both reopened in the same format they were in when I closed them no matter what order I opened or closed them in.

I tried a few other programs and they all seem to work the same way, the shape and position they are in when they close is the one they are in when they open.

Is this what you mean?

Mike

Hi

Yes I'm using Windows 7 64bit Home Premium.
Since I read your post I have been paying attention and even after rebooting etc, the windows always open the same size as when I closed them.

Mike

I had Windows 7 32 bit running on my old computer and I'm pretty sure it worked the same way. I can't say for sure but I think I would have noticed.

Can anyone else confirm how their Windows 7 machine is working.

I'm almost sure that the action you are seeing isn't typical.
But I don't know where you would go to configure Window properties of that sort.

Mike

if you open a window and then resize and reposition it, then open a nother and do the same when you open any other windows they open in the same way as the one before it. On my Vista drive any windows I open always reopen in their old position and size no matter how many I opened. Win7 does not do that.

Have you tested this out as another user?

Have you tried Folder Options/ View, "Reset folders"?

I don't notice this problem in Windows 7, 64-bit or 32-bit.

What is it like from Safe Mode?

Used notepad, paint and Word - opened, resized and repositioned all three windows and then closed all three windows. Re-opened each one and they opened at the same place and size they were when I closed them. I think you got a glitch, Ken.

Windows 7 RC1 (been running almost since it was released) 32bit.

Let's try this again, open a folder and size and position it. open another one and do the same. now close them both and then reopen the same two without moving or resizing them. notice that the first one opens in the same manner as the last folder you opened? and that the next folder has the same dimensions? if your folders remember where they were when they were closed then yours seems to work and a lot of out here have win 7 that don't.

Yes, the way you describe it in your last post, I can reproduce it on my Windows 7 machine. Dammed if I ever noticed that before.

It will give me something to play with when I get bored, as I have not previously been inconvenienced by it. I guess I'm use to my machines doing funny things and I don't notice any additional odd behavior.

Yeah I completely missed that they were explorer windows and not program windows. My explorer windows do as you say.

Crap! Now I'm annoyed! lol

My bad, I should have explained it right from the start. I hope M$ comes out with an update....... my opinion if it's worth anything is that Windows 7 is just Vista fixed.....

Maximizing a window, Applying the view to "All Folders" then "Reset Folders", both via Folder Options/ View, doesn't fix the problem but it makes it less noticeable for me.

this seems to be the only answer MS has for this......

In Windows Vista, a folder window opens at the same size and location on the desktop that it did the last time you closed it, based on the location where the folder is stored. For example, if you resize the Music folder window and then close it, it'll be the same size the next time you open it.

Windows 7 remembers one size and location setting for all your folders and libraries. So each time you open Windows Explorer, it'll open at the same size and location on the desktop that it did the last time you closed it, regardless of which folder or library you open.

It dosent seem as if they are going to fix it.

Hi

Ok, I get get the same thing with the Windows Explorer windows.

I don't find this a big problem for myself since I never seem to open more then 2 windows (one for the source and on for the destination) at the same time and I use the drag to the edge feature (which I really like) to have them each use half the screen, with out a lot of fussing around.

But I can see that if you want to have three or four windows open and have them each use a certain area of the screen this could be annoying.

shellfolderfix seems to have fixed the problem for me. My folders now open where I left them last. now I'll reboot to see if it stays that way.

I posted this fix in Windows 7 news but I only got one reply and basically the guy says that this isn't a bug.

So much for trying to help. You know, a silk purse from a sow’s ear sort of thing.

Anyway, here is a link that put's a band aid on the bug until M$ fixes it after we complain enough.

It's currently 100% free, no popup, no obligation. This guy created this program and I give him kudos and you should too.

I am not affiliated in any way with the dude.

The program is called ShellFolderFix.

It installs on x86 and x64, both versions are included in the installer.

It runs, does the job of remembering folder size and location in Windows 7 and gives extra features like window titles in aero glass.

Very non intrusive program and can load with startup.

I have NO IDEA of functionality in Vista, from what I understand this is a Windows 7 program only. I loath Vista too much to install Vista and try it out even in the name of science.

See for yourself and pass the word not the gas.

I have Vista and have had no issues with it other than a few programs that won't run. Vista remembers the folder sizes and positions. from what I can see Win 7 is what Vista fixed should be and M$ is making us pay for their inability to do the right thing.
