I have a client that only wnats one server for their company. They have just reorganised and cut staff.

5-10 users..prob 6.

I need to confirm if windows 2003 and exchange 2003 and AD (as its the only server in the comp) and terminal services can run on a single box. I know everything bar terminla service sis normally happy on one box separately or as part of SBS. But i cant use SBS because I need terminal ervices.

So can someone let me know. Its cheaper for them to get a dual processor stuffed with RAM.

5 user's in one office.

with one person using a vpn into the site to operate all applications including bespoke microsoft access databases.

i just need the nod from someone as its hard trying to find KB articles or previous posts that encompass all of these things.

Thanks in advance guys and gals.

Eagerly look forward to your replies :)

It is possible to do this to have TS on the same server as the rest, not wise, but possible.

I noticed you also stated that there will be VPN access. Is the server itself going to be running the VPN software, or is another piece of equipment?

I know its not advisable and I will give them the 2 options i jsut wanted to be 100% sure that Terminal services can run on an AD server that would be the root of everything and the only server as i will need ot buy this next week whilst im on site.

So your defo sure that all of these itesm can coexist and function on one server?

and the VPN will be handled by the touer as opposed to 2k3

how come you ask re: vpn?

Well SBS says it can all run there. I have one SBS sit that uses Exchange and SQL but we have 2 TS/Citrix boxes doing the client bits. 40 Users. I would suggest that getting a separate box for TS is best. "Eggs and one basket".

[blue]Arguably the best cat skinner around ! [/blue]

I asked about the VPN due to having all the previous stuff on the computer, I personally would find it painful to watch VPN go on the server as well. Just one more breaking point.

As ascotta states, "eggs in one backet" isn't always cool in the computer world....

Microsoft say... TS cannot run on SBS and needs to be another server within the domain.

:(

I think im going to have to root out my MSDN and do a full install to check all this. :(

need to chck all runs ok as separate software and

all runs ok on SBS...

just so i know.

thanks for your feedback... if anyone has any advise or somments because they have a single box.. please tell me

thanks everyone

If I can do it on one box.. don't worry i will advise them on "eggs" scenario. i do totally 100% agree... they are an existing client with equipment about to be removed... nothing they can do about it.. they have a small INSTANT reserve.... and need a solution asap.

terminal services is going on for the remote guy really.. and license savings for short term.

thanks peeps

as a follow up....

My plan is to convince them to buy 2x servers. 1x (A) SBS 2003 running win2003 / ad/ (root) / exhcange 2003 plus files and 1x (B) win2003 and termal Server on that one, plus printers etc...

the site will ahve an sdsl (hopefully) router and a sonic firewall with a 10/100 switch plus laser printers etc...

Ascotta.

On your 2x terminal server boxes. arethese DC's with the active directory and printers loaded etc... or something else.

AGAIN:

anyone please comment on this task, I've had the go ahead and the client is is about to pay the bill.

Any recommendations to my plan please advise.

thanks peeps
