Another thread asks about using Win2k Server with AD in an NT 4 domain.

I don't need AD yet and just want to use an existing Win2k Server as a file server in an NT environment. (I want to avoid having to blank the machine and install NT4.) AD is not running (machine currently in default WORKGROUP), so I plan to add the computer as I would any client - giving the domain name and an admin user/pwd to authorise. Anything wrong with that approach?

if you are not going to install it as a domain controller (so if you are not going to set up AD) then it will work (because that server will be a regular member server

If you want to have a mixed environment (PDC's, BDC's and Windows 2000 DC), then you will have to upgrade your PDC first to Win2K
(take a BDC offline in case something goes wrong, you can promote that machine to PDC if your real PDC doesn't function anymore) I have not failed, I just found 10000 ways that don't work

Thanks to both of you above - I'll be trying it soon...

...but in the mean time can't speak to my PDC (see new thread!).

You will be ok just remember to deactivate the dynamic DNS on your W2K server.
If not your NT 4 machine will not see your W2K server in network neigberhood

Hope this help

Hi Marius,

Can you say how to deactivate dynamic DNS on Win2k? Earlier I tried to stop DNS, but it insisted on at least pointing to itself (127.0.0.1) as DNS server.

Go to your TCP/IP properties and disable register to DNS.

Hope this helps you
