I have very little experience and/or knowledge of SSL so this may sound like a stupid question to some. I am running Win 2000 server with IIS 5.0. I am hosting multiple sites and to date, haven't had a need for SSL. But now I need to implement security for a couple of new e-commerce sites.
I know Win2000 includes provisions for establishing security cetificates. Can I accomplish the same results using the Windows SSL as I could by getting a Verisign certificate? Many consumers now look specifically for the "little lock" in the lower right corner of the browser. Will a Windows SSL cert function the same as a Verisign cert (i.e. the "little lock" and secure connection prompts)?
Also, can I secure multiple sites within IIS with one certificate or can I create separate certificates for each site on which I need SSL?
I know some of these ?'s are very elementary but I am just now getting started with the whole SSL and encryption realm. Any advice is greatly appreciated or suggestions for good reference sources on the web would be great too. The Microsoft websites are good, I know, but they don't answer these initial "easy" questions. Thanks again.
