Every 3-4 days...pretty much like clockwork our w2k server running term server...hangs...just working along then...poof, mouse doesn't move, doesn't respond to keyboard...nothing...we reboot it and it will be fine for another 3-4 days. We have it patched up to date and really don't even run that many apps off it...it is just kind of a gateway to our other server. Any input would be great. Thanks so much, Michelle

I am assuming it does this to you when you aren't watching... they tend to do this. It isn't normal for it to lock up every 3-4 days as I have had a W2K T-Server running for 4 weeks now without restarting it. It is possible that your memory is damaged, or possibly something in your MB. The other possibility is environment. After running into massive problems with another server I have been maintaining, I finally decided to leave a hardware monitoring program visible on the screen. Unfortunatly, I had to leave the system logged in to accomplish this, but what it did is show me that the system was suffering from internal brownouts, a faulty power supply, as well as the temperature had climbed into the 70C range. So, I cooled the system using very inventive methods and replaced the power supply and I haven't had a problem with it for over 3 weeks now. So, bottom line, your going to have to start poking around. Also, monitor the incomming requests to your server, it is possible that someone is targeting your system with requests for the TS service.

Hope this helps.

Actually, one time I was in the room, turned around working on another computer...when it locked. I did check temp ranges. But didn't think about power...great idea, what monitoring program did you use for that? I am using the software that came with the intel stl2 motherboard. It is really good, but I haven't seen how to get a history type reading out of it...only current, real time stuff. The memory has been on my mind as a potential cause - I have new arriving on Monday. Thanks for the help!

NP. Glad I could bring some ideas to light. I used ASUS Probe... its not a real sophisticated program, but I left it on the screen in the for-front so when it did lock up, I saw exactly what was going on. Windows 2000 has a lot of logging abilities you may want to look into, its under "Performance" in the Admin menu. But it wont give you information on your hardware as far as condition. Often times too, depending on the manufacturer, they will put some "Puney" power supply in (300W) when really it should have a 420W+ to handle the multiple HDD's, CD's and other devices.
