Win 2000 Sound and Shut down Problems

I bought a used laptop from my mother, and had to upgrade from Win 98 to Win 2000 for any programs to work. Most programs work now with no problems, but I can't get any sound. I have tried everything I can think of. The machine also freezes up when I try to shut down. It just sits there with a blank screen until I shut the power off by the switch. Anyone have any suggestions?
