Hello again, Everyone!!

Well, I was able to find MS Visual Basic 6.0 Professional Edition on EBay (thread on 2/10) asking which to buy). Here's the deal. The book that came with the disk says that Visual FoxPro is the software application that is used for spreadsheets, forms, queries, etc. It is part of Visual Studio, which are very expensive I'm finding. Is this necessary? I know that a very large and complex rating system we used at my last job was written entirely in VB and had data on top of data and used Access as it's database. Can I just use VB6 to create the applications that I want to do? I really want to make business apps that allow storage of different prices, stock numbers, codes, etc and will create reports as called for and allows users to enter the data on a user form on one screen instead of an 11 worksheet Excel workbook manually. Am I trying to make VB6 do more than it will do?

Thank you,tearsmith

What'd they do? Sell you a VB6 CD with a FoxPro book or something?

No, you don't need FoxPro to build applications. You can use VB6 and use Jet or MSDE as your database.

Well, dilettante, I think you may be on to something.

I received a box with Visual Basic 6.0 Professional edition on the front. In the box was 1 CD for VB 6.0 Pro. One CD with "msdn Library Visual Studio 6.0" om it, and one CD with "MS Service Pak 3 Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0" on it. Also, two books. A small "MS VS6.0 Resource Guide" (which is just basically full of additional books and programs you can buy) and one thicker book "Visual Studio Deveploping for Windows and the Web, Guide to Visual Studio 6.0". This last book goes through each CD included in the Studio and it's features. This is where I saw the stuff about FoxPro. Can someone tell me what I recieved and is it not all there are what? I bought it on EBay so I have no idea what is really supposed to be included. Can someon who owns this tell me what's up?

Thanks,
Tearnie

Visual Basic is part of Visual Studio. The third book you've got there is describing features of the full suite, much of which is irrelevant to VB. The CDs you've got, and the box description, sound to me like you have the correct product

Hi Tearsmith:

Here is a list of items that were in the box of a MS VB6 Pro box that was new:

CD: Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 Professional Edition
CD: Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 Service Pack 3

2 CD Set: MSDN Libaray Visual Studio 6.0

4 CD Set: Visual Studio 6.0 Plus Pack, which included:
Disk 1 Microsoft Windows 2000 Developer's Readiness Kit
MSDE For Visual Studio Developer Training
Microsoft Windows NT Service Pack 4 12/98
MSDE for Visual Studio 6.0

Booklet: Getting Started Setup Guide for Visual Studio 6.0

End-User License Agreement for Microsoft Software

There may have been another booklet -- I may have misplaced it.

Hope this helps,
Cassie

Hi Tearsmith:

I found the missing item. It is all commercials:

Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 Resources package, containing:
Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 Resource Guide (as described above)
"Microsoft Developer Training" pamphlet
"Try a full version of Visual InterDev 6.0 FREE* for 90 Days!" card
Product registration card
Card for ordering a free issu of "Microsoft Office & Visual Basic for Applications Developer" magazine
"Unleash the power of Windows and the Web." pamphlet

HTH,
Cassie

Sounds like tearsmith is in pretty good shape after all then.

The MS developer tool sets available by retail typically come with little in the way of useful hardcopy documents. Just as with most software these days. You need to look for good books and rely on the MSDN Library CDs more than any paper that comes in the box.
