Hi NT 4 experts!

I have NT 4 Server running on a server that presently has
1 processor.

I have a second processor that I want to install to get
a dual-processor SMP server.

I have heard that when the NT 4 operating system is installed, you can specify whether or not you want to have dual-processor capability.

?? Is there any way that I can tell what this setting is ?

Or do I just have to install the second processor and then see what happens?

Can I just CHANGE the setting in my current NT 4 OS to get it to operate in SMP mode... or will I have to reinstall NT 4 ?

Thanks, John

the critical file is HAL.DLL (HAL standing for Hardware Abstraction Layer). This file ONLY needs to be replaced if the install of NT was NOT on an MPS (multi processor) motherboard.
If the original installation was on a single processor machine BUT WITH AN MPS MOTHERBOARD fitted then the installation of NT would have defaulted to an MPS build by default, so allowing you to add processors without a full rebuild.
An MPS build of NT will not run on a NON MPS motherboard.

Thanks John and Phil,

Do you know of any setting I can check in the NT configuration on this server to determine whether or not the original install of NT 4 defaulted to an MPS build?
