I have a LAN set up in which I am running MacIntosh computers through Cisco Fasthub400 and Cisco 2900 switch and connecting to a MacIntosh Server as well as a Netware 5.1 server. I am attempting to use an Apple program called Network Assistant to remotely manage my Mac workstations but seem to be having a problem with the sitch setup. I have been told that the switch needs to be set to half duplex with Spanning Tree Portfast disabled. Can anyone elaborate on this for me. Thanks.

Leave spantree portfast enabled. To prevent loops during spantree reconvergence the ports will wait 30sec (default) before using the ports. Portfast skips this delay and allows you to use the port immediately. Basically portfast can/should be used on all ports that aren't used to connect to other switches.

Half duplex means in a computer 'conversation' only 1 device can xmit at one time. Full duplex allows both to xmit simultaneous. Think of it as the difference between a walkie-talkie and a telephone.
