I intend to buy the LG GSA-4120B 12x Internal Super Multi DVD+/-R/RW Drive. I have a computer with WIN98SE, but my processor is only Pentium III with a speed of 450 MHz.

Could you tell me if this will work? Because I don't want to spend Can.$160.- for nothing....

Is the LG brand reliable for DVD drives?

Thank you for your input.

Charles.

The link in my previous post does not appear to work.
So go to click on Computer Products -> CD/DVD Drives -> DVD Writers -> scroll down to GSA 4120B -> click on More -> click on Manual -> d/l Manual

Hi Ski,
Your info was most valuable. I'm so glad you guided me to the site I d/l the manual and there
is lots of information there.
So, it looks like Ii will have to upgrade my computer before buying this Super Multi Triple DVD Drive.....
Thank you very much for your tip.
Charles.

You're welcome.
Glad to be of help.

This begs a further question; maybe a really dumb one.
Why are writers and DVDs limited by processor? I can understand (reluctantly) that the power consumption is an issue, but I can not see the processor connection.

It would relate to the speed at which the data can be converted to the format needed by the reader and writen to/ read from the disk.

I think it's more of an issue of, it LG says a 1.6GHz processor, then thay can not possibly be wrong under any circumstances.

I've installed a 24x cd burner into a K6-2 450 and it writes cds at full speed like a champ. Given that roughly 7 cds fit onto a dvd, you should be able to write a 2x dvd-r without any problems. If we start talking about a 12x burn, we're probably getting into the shady area.

Todays fast drives are far more capable of working in older systems, than are older drives working in older systems. The hardware has larger buffers & more advanced buffer underrun protection - and the software today is far more effecient than it ever has been!

I honestly believe this dvd drive will work in a 450MHz system, just probably not to its fullest potential. But I don't know for positive.

Hi Dakota81,
You really gave me a glimmer of hope......that that LG Multi Drive GSA-4120B might work in my computer with my PentiumIII, 450 MHz.
I wouldn't mind if it is slower, as long as it works....
Right now, all I have is an old CD-Writer Plus, HP, Series 7200 (at least 4 or 5 years old) and it writes at 2x300 KB/sec, like a snail... The other day, I wrote a CD-R with about 600 MB of data, it took 2 hours !!!.....
Thank you for your input.
Charles.

I agree with dakota81, I havn't read anything on the link supplied but suspect this minimum spec if for full speed read and writes! this drive would likely work fine if speeds were restricted to 1x/2x etc.
At least this way you have a fast writer for when you do upgrade.
Or take advantage of the extremely low prices older 4 & 8 speed drives are going for (they still won't write at full speed either)
Pioneer 106/107D etc
