I see a fair amount of Java related jobs, but the job description usually wants someone with at least 3-5 years of experience of Java programming, JSP, Java Servlets, some brand or another of J2EE server (WebLogic, and WebSphere seem to be the two of the more popular ones), etc. In essence, you really need to know Java. Entry level Java jobs are scarce. The best bet to break into Java is to: 1. Be working somewhere already and volunteer/ask to work with Java programmers.
2. Community service type work, where you volunteer your skills, and pick up as much as you can.
