HI,

I have been reading all the links about CR9 and the inability to compile and distribute, but before I buy one I want to make sure I completly understand.

If I create a report in CR9 and compile it or do whatever with one of the 3rd party viewers then my user doesn't need anything installed on their machine - not even a web browser (just the tcpip connection to the data)? The business doesn't even have to have a web server. It can work exactly like CR8.5 compile and distribute?

Thanks for any info.

You don't have to compile it -- in fact you CANNOT compile it. The only requirement is that the user that is going to execute the report has to have access to the physical location of the .rpt file. The user can just browse to the desired .rpt file and execute it. Crystal does not have to be installed and you do not need internet access.

Or said a different way: The only things needed on the client PC are the viewer program, the RPT and a connection to the data. (Of course if you are using TCPIP over the WEB to get to the data, then you need a web connection).

Some viewers improve on the old compile process by allowing you to store login info. Most of the inexpensive viewers do not have the scheduling feature that came with the compiler, but there are also schedulers out there. None of them require that you "compile" the report, but one (Data Link Viewer) allows you to encrypt the RPT so that it can't be opened by anyone in design mode (only run within the viewer).

A pretty complete list of the viewers available can be found on my web site's LINKS page.
