Why is there an SCN option when creating lines on Server Edition?

I am under the impression that if you have server edition or server edition select that each V2 expansion must have a server edition license to operate. Until now I have never thought to look closely at the options available when creating a new trunk on these systems. Today I noticed that there is an SCN option under trunks. I have always used the Add Expansion System on the summary page of manager to add another system. My question is why does this option exist under lines? Is what I have been using on the summary page just a shortcut? The fact that this exists implies that I could connect to another V2 that does not have an SE license on it. I don't see why you would create an SCN under lines for SE if they really want to restrict this or they do feel the need to take it out. I plan to test but thought I would ask for some outside thoughts.

An SCN to from SE to non SE would solve some migration issues for customers.

Yes and No. The underlying architecture for a Server Edition network is exactly the same as SCN, hence the same type of trunk. However, they will detect none-SE systems in an SE network and refuse to play.

You can use non-SCN H323 IP trunks to link one SE network to another (see You might be able to use the same to create some linkage between a SE network and non-SE SCN network. ("Might" meaning I haven't tried it so absolutely no guarantee).

Stuck in a never ending cycle of file copying.

I have H323 trunks running from a Server edition select to a 30 system IPO SCN with no issues. Been running it for months now and can say its a good way to migrate customers on IPO to SE but it would be much easier on everyone, me and the customer, if Avaya would give a way to SCN. Even if it were timed like a trial license it would be a huge help. I know they could do it, its that they won't do it.

If I didn't do many the things Avaya says you can't or shouldn't do, I would have far fewer happy customers.
