Why is SMS_SQL_Monitor is producing errors

We have our SMS site located on one server...and the SQL database which SMS uses, located on another server. I've noticed that the SMS Service Manager is showing all services running on the SMS Site server are running ok. The only service that is failing is the SMS_SQL_Monitor which is running from another server where our SQL database was located. Consequently, we are receiving error messagas every day at the site server, warning us that there are problems with SMS_SQL_Monitor. Yeah...it's not running...and it can't be started. Does anyone know why?
Is this a permissions problem i.e. SMS does not have the right to monitor the SQL database.
