Why is my transaction Log 'GRAYED OUT' in Sqlerver2000 ?

My OS is XP Pro and I installed MS SqlServer 2000 - Personal Edition. After creating a database and transaction log, I tried to backup the database but the transaction log was 'GRAYED OUT'. Cany anyone tell why?

Is the transaction log recovery method set for FULL or SIMPLE? If it's set for SIMPLE, you can't do log backups. Look at the Books Online under SIMPLE RECOVERY METHOD.
