Hi,

I'm trying to clean-up my Windows 98 PC, using the helpful information in the FAQ section.

When I ran MSCONFIG, I noticed the following line in start-up:
Code:
 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KB891711\KB891711.EXE

Can someone please tell me what is it doing there and is it necessary?

Is this related to why my PC starts "Updating your setup files..." every time it is re-booted?

Thanks!

Thanks smah,

I've read the information on the Microsoft support website. But it's still unclear to me why is this item in my start-up file and why does it run every time I re-boot the PC.

All the other Microsoft patches that require a re-boot, just run once and are then fully installed. Why is this one there every time?

Help please... am still confused!

The part of the KB article that says it runs as a service tells me that it runs whenever windows is running. Whatever part of 'Vulnerability in Cursor and Icon Format Handling Could Allow Remote Code Execution' must be something that needs to be monitored/changed in real-time. Whatever it is, this patch doesn't just replace an old file with a new one; it actively runs & monitors something.

Thanks smah,

Silly me, I didn't take that point in when I read the article. :~/ :-0

Thanks for your help!
