Why does Office open two copies

With Office 98 or Office 2000 when a document is selected from the Start/Documents list or from Explorer two copies of the same document are opened.

The first one opens fine and then a message pops up saying the document is already open do you wish to open a copy.

Happens with Excel and Word but not with Access (or at least if it does you don't see it because with Access only one database is open at any time)

Operating system is Windows 2000 and it is happening on more than one machine in stand alone and networked environments.

Has anyone else experienced this? I suspect a dll that has been installed by some other program.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Does executing - Run word.exe /regserver....same with excel.exe solve the problem?
