Why does access seem to hog the whole PC when running queries

Why is it that when I am running a query with linked DB2 tables access seems to take over my whole pc. I cannot open Outlook or another access db.
I am able to go to my computer and navigate to do things that way when a large query is running....I have XP running on this work PC.
Also, sometimes when you press escape the query will cancel.....often pressing escape does nothing. If the tables are small and local it will kill the query....
