Why do single quotes appear round internet email addresses

I am using a VB Method sendobject to automatically email a report to clients. This works fine in Outlook but not with GW (both MAPI compliant yes?). GW seems to add single quotes around the address eg internet:post@fred.com becomes 'internet:post@fred.com' this makes the email undeliverable. Any Ideas.
