Office computer with W2000 pro, 550 MHz CPU, two drives installed, NTFS file system on both.

If I right click in Explorer on a drive, it takes about 30 seconds for the dialog box to appear, then another 20 or so if I click on properties for the pi chart to appear.

My home computer with W98SE, 800 MHz CPU, one drive, responds almost instantly.

What gives?

#1 - Make sure that U have well defragmented disk. (I recommend "Perfect Disk").
#2 - There is a utility from MS called TweakUI where U can set the preferred speed on your rightclick menu.

I defrag twice a week with diskeeper lite.

I'll check out the utility.

I rarely defrag ntfs partitions - never had this problem - can't really see what difference defragging would make.
Do you have other slow events (eg, copying files, opening apps etc)?

You give no history to this problem. Presumably, at some point this wasn't happening. So, when did it start and were there any auspicious events prior to this - eg hardware/software/settings change, crash, virus?

wolluf,

I don't know that defrag should make any difference since it's a property of the entire disk, but I do it during my lunch hour (I live close enough to go home for lunch).

I've had this setup for about 8 months now, and it's always been this way. Apps seem to open at about the speed I expect, but I haven't timed them against the home machine (faster CPU, but slower disk drive).
