I just noticed for the first time, that all my oracle export dmp files that are created on a Win2K share are always fragmented and will not defrag. even if the drive is defragmented and almost empty when i do my export, the dmp file is immediately fragmented all over the drive, and the defragger will NOT ever defragment them. Im not sure if this has always been the case, I just noticed it lately when my exports became VERY much slower than usual, (going from about 45 minutes to about 4 hours)

I guess the answer is a third party defrag program, but I just wonder if anyone can explain whats going on, so I can understand it..

thanks for any comments...

GDM8,

i've heard that Defragmentation of NTFS included in Windows 2k is very poor - If you run the third party tool on the "defragmented" disk it still has a lot of work to do - maybe that's an issue here

best regards
Chris
