As I was having various problems, I decided to re-install XP and found that all 'My documents' had been deleted.(I thought) However when using Star Office I could see documents which didn't show up in 'My documents'. After some investigation I found that my docs were still on the system, but were 'hidden' When I selected view hidden files I was able to find all my docs again. Why are files hidden in this way ?

Have the file types in 'My Documents' been added to the 'Hide Files of these types' list?

Open Explorer, View, Options, View

If there are files like .doc, .xls, .jpg, .html in there then erase the entries.

Checked explorer, but nothing in there to indicate why files are hidden, however I have another theory. When I first installed XP I created one user Geoff. On the second install i tried to create the same user and it appended some numbers to the username - something like Geoff-000
Now the system does not recognise Geoff as a valid user and therefore hides Geoffs My documents folder. Fortunately I have now managed to recover all my 'lost' documents.
