For years I was a Seagate buyer, then it was Western Digital. Then, Maxtor (or anything cheap). Now, after many years of giving my opinion about drive makers based on experience, I'm ready to ask everyone else. Who's your HD Daddy?!

Please, don't say Maxtor! :)

Tuna - should be asking this question here -> forum751

Thanks Linney!

To me, it's a toss up between Seagate and WD. Every now and then we loose a drive here at home, and it's a pain... Just hoping to widen the gap between pain this time. Thanks again for your input.

I recently had the cd-rom/r on my laptop dink out on me (still haven't replaced it). Now the HD on the HP has joined it in Digital Heaven/Hell, and surprise! The DVD player sitting on the entertainment center has abandoned me as well. Can't backup my laptop (which is critical really because of my billions of hours of coding stored there), the woman can't use the computer cause it's dead, we can't watch movies... looks like I get to spend money tonight... lol

sounds like a bad run of drives there - hope you have more luck with replacements!

Pliz don't say Maxtor!
I was happy with Maxtor for a while..less noisy...but now...feels like a plane is about to land. Even my fans don't make that much noise! Also tossed out two maxtor drives in two months. Had to call Maxtor for replacement! Even Maxtor Utility is bad!

The best and solid drive - Seagate!!

why did I leave seagate??.why why!!

Well, my Seagate ST-225 (remember 20 Meg drives?) went bad, and I didn't buy another seagate for years! lol I was pure WD after that...

We had a bad batch of WD's at my office, so I stopped WD's and then just grabbed Quantum Fireballs (big problems there too)... lol

I guess I'll try Seagate again... but I'm mad at them over Crystal Reports. ;-)

I have had Maxtors,Samsungs,Wd and some problems with all. Maxtor was ,for me the best to deal with in regards to warranty. I have an old Samsung 10 meg sounds like jet winding up for take off but still working(so far). Kelly

What is that 10 meg connected to? Is it an MFM controller?

It is what old farts like me view the original IDE interface and generally the ATAPI interface. It uses Flux or magnetic changes on the drive surface to do the read and write. To do the "write" you use a different voltage level than one would do if doing a "read" on the drive head.
