Without using Google (or similar), does anyone know who Alex Hoag is, and why he would be pertinent to this forum?

It's meant to be fun, so maybe using Google would make more sense.

I tried google with just the name, and all I can tell is that there is a "Run for Sunshine" 5K run in Colorado Springs named after him (numerous links).

And there is an "Alex Hoag" who races modified car-thingies on dirt tracks.... Not sure if this is the same guy, but it seems unlikely.

Thanks Stella!
My googling returned nothing better than anotherhiggins'.

So: is Leo di Caprio's "Catch Me If You Can" character based on Alex Hoag? <--Then we'd have another historical movie for Dimandja's thread1391-970103...
;-)

No, Catch Me If You Can, is based on the life of Frank Abagnale Jr.

Alex Hoag is person responsible for the the phrase 'Smart Alec'.

Oh yes, right CajunCenturion, thanks!
Smart Alec - This is obviously a common phrase in the English language, I'll try to remember that...

MakeItSo,
My googling returned nothing better than anotherhiggins'.

First round of mine, too. But then, I recalled CC's hint, that the person is pertinent to this forum, so I added another keyword to the search.
So my search was based on this expression:

"Alex Hoag" word

I was prepared to change the last keyword a few times, but it turned out to be not necessary.

I've never heard either of "Smart Alec" or of its prototype before.

Smart Alec is commonly used in the US. These days it might be more common to hear 'smart a*s', but smart alec is still used.

For unfamiliar speakers, it's worth noting that "smart Alec" is used in a derogatory manner.
