Current system:

Celeron 1.0 Ghz / 100mhz fsb
Geforce4 mx420 agp with 64mb ram
512mb pc133 sdram
10gb 7200rpm hard drive
windows 2000 pro

Given the system specs above, which of these do you think would improve the performance of 3d games the most? (I don't have much money to work with here!)

1. adding between 512 to 1024 MB pc133 sdram
2. upgrading from a geforce4 mx420 to a geforce4 ti4200
3. upgrading from a 1.0 ghz celeron cpu to a 2.0 ghz celeron, or to an athlon xp 2000, along with a new motherboard (increased fsb speed)

Going from the 1gig-2gig cely and sticking another 512 of SDram in will take your 3Dbenchmark from? 2000 to 3750? just guessing, but putting in a GF4 4200Ti with your 1gig Celeron will give you an instant 7,000 at a guess.
Put the same GF4 4200Ti on a Nforce2 motherboard with an XP2.0+ processor and that'll go up to 11,000.

So answering your question, the graphics card upgrade will have the greatest effect on 3D games but still will be bottle necked by the 1gig Celeron and slow SDram but not at all by the amount of ram you have just the speed.
