I am using Norton internet security and I am not impressed by it. Can anyone recommand me a better program or eventually the best antivirus and the best firewalll? (I am using Win xp pro) thanks

Well as for best, that is merely opinion and we all have our opinions. Also I agree with your opinion, im not to fond of norton or symantec either, but as I said everyone has there own opinions. So im just stating mine.

My opinion ewido is the best. They have a 14 day trial you can use. Its an antivirus/antimalware/antispwyare but its not a firewall. As for firewalls I prefer hardware ones such as an actual seperate harware firewall or using one built into a router.

Heres the link for ewido.

Once again in my opinion I prefer Linksys routers. Keep in mind routers work with broadband only not dial up. If and when you do get a router be sure to upgrade the firmware on it if there are any updates available.

I dito what E-Freak mentioned, it is all about OPINION...

Actually EWIDO is not an AntiVirus programm, but more like an Anti Trojan... Do not get me wrong I do use it extensively...

but I also run a true dedicated AntiViral Programm, here I prefer AntiVir, but AVG and Kapersky are great aswell...

as to Firewalls, I second what my colleage said, HARDWARE Firewalls are the better... yet I also back that one up with a Software one, and here I prefer Kerio Personal Firewall, but ZoneAlarm is pretty good aswell (easier to set up than Kerio)...

I am also not a fan of Norton. What I use is as follows:

Anti Virus - AVG (Free)
Firewall - Hardware (built into Router is what I use..NAT/SPI) and Zone Alarm software firewall (Free)
Anti Spyware - Microsoft is the best I have used and is my personal favourite (Free)

I have a Netgear router (DG384GT) - and certainly would never reccommend it, Linksys are much better.

Once in a blue moon I may get a virus alert which is quickly dealt with, and I have minimal bother with spyware/malware and no issues with hackers.

I also reccommend using the modified HOSTS file available from
'When all else fails.......read the manual'

I recently dumped Norton and acquired AVG, So far I'm loving it, it's none intrusive it does what it is supposed to, and it does not hog all my laptop's resources. It also found a couple things norton had missed.

Coupled with AVG, i regularly do online scans at Trend Micro's Website just to be sure.

As For firewall I've been using Sygate's Personal Firewall for a few years now and it works beautifuly. It has a lot of blocking features, and rule creation is very simple, to allow certain apps to exit while denying others.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

We use Symantec and it sux! It will find known spyware/adware but cannot remove it many times. We usually have to run Spybot or Adaware (free versions) to clean our pc's. I've used AVG at home at it works great.
