Hi, I am newbie in networking, our company is going to buy a new Cisco 3550 switch to segment the VLAN as follows:

segment 1(VLAN2) segment 2 (VLAN3)
3com edge switch(100MBps) 3com edge switch (1000MBps)
---------------- ----------------
12 servers running 12 servers running real-time system
email server
SQL server,etc
80 PCs

segment1 and 2 can talk each other, please give the comments which Cisco Catalyst switch model can be used, SMI or EMI, 24 port or 12 port with 2 GBIC.

Any comments would highly appreciated.

First of all, EMI image to get the ablity to route between subnets (VLANS) without resorting to the old "router on a stick".

THe more the merrier for port count but having the two gig ports is a real plus since the server farm is on a Gig link already. I dont remember if the 3com equipment would work with an Etherchannel configuration back to the Cisco. I seem to recall that some models could.

I agree with Mike, the 3550 will work great and you need to make sure it has the EMI software on it.
