I appreciate your helping a Unix/Linux guy to figure out something trivial...

When I receive an .XLS attached to email in Outlook, I double-click it and it opens in Excel just fine. Then, when I decide I want a "local copy", I use "File|Save As.." and the default Save As.. "folder" appears to be some sort of virtual folder where Outlook/Excel have temporarily written the .XLS file... I can go ahead and save it elsehwere where I want,.. all works fine.

My PROBLEM: There are TONS of documents in this virtual folder that now disturb me because of their age, sensitive content, etc. I want to purge this virtual folder, but I cannot find it on the hard drive.

My QUESTION: The folder is shown in the "Save As..." dialog box as
C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\OLK8D\

HOWEVER, I cannot find folder (or file) "OLK8D" in that area. Neither do I see anything of notable size in C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\ that would be a proximate match for that many .XLS files held in some single-file database storage...

I have the rights to that folder (as Admin) and I have flagged the folder display to allow showing of system files/folders, hidden files, etc..

What the heck is this thing? Where is it keeping its data? How do I find and purge it's contents?!

Thanks for helping and sorry for the long explanation.

SOLVED:

After I wrote that post, I wondered if there was something lurking in Outlook's hierarchy and since it appeared "virtual", perhaps I was not being shown the "real thing".

It turns out that there's an application data folder under Outlook's install that creates a link to a virtual space... all very shabby smoke and mirrors stuff...

However, when I searched for "OLK8D" I was able to find the link, which allowed me to find a bona fide folder that I could then purge of files.

Strange but true. Thanks.

C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\
or
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
all files listed here are usually not viewable, it is a safety precaution of the OS... why? I dunno...

You may want to read the following, which will give you some insights as to how to access them locally...

Hidden folders in temporary internet files folder
