Where is shadow copies stored?

I am curious to know where shadow copies of files are stored. Does the shadows reside in a seperate folder or area of the HD? Is there a way to exclude the shadow copy from a backup? I assume an exclusion of the shadowed files would greatly reduce the volume of data on a backup tape.

It's a point in time copy of the data on your hard drive. The blocks are locked and any changes are written to new space.
