One minute I start the PC (LAPTOP), and my Bios screen flashes to tell me:

Internal CD-DVD ROM: Installed

Next time I boot up it goes:

Internal CD-DVD ROM: Not Installed

How do I know if this poxy thing is broken, or just the bios shot to bits?

Any clues

I know what I know...don't presume that I know what I don't! Smithism!!!

The battery's not buggered is it? I had a similar problem with a laptop where I had to boot it up about three times before I actually got the hard-disk detected (everytime as well).

Maybe try replacing th battery, because as you said in your other thread about the partitions, you replaced the HDD, so you may have knocked the battery.

Just a thought...

Only other thing I can think of is:

Is the DVD drive new i.e. did it not come with the laptop? If this is the case, maybe the M/B is a bit funny with them. Have you tried looking on the laptop manufacturer's site, or looked in a manual?

What about resetting your BIOS?

Or...long winded way...replace the battery and then reset the BIOS. Put all your own settings back in and see if this sorts the problem ;-).
