where is my auto updates systray icon?

hello
in my office, some xp pc's have the icon in the system tray while others don't.
what controls this?
I would like to have the tray icon on all machines

Are you talking abou the icon that when you hover above it says "updates are ready to install"? If so, this icon will only appear after updates have been downloaded...which may vary from pc to pc.

Start > Programs - find the Windows Update icon (near the top). Right click > send to desktop. Then you can leave it there, or drag it to the taskbar.
