I have customized Word 2000 templates on one computer, and want to copy them to Word 2000 on another computer. I can see them in Word's template window (what comes up when you go to file --> new) on the first computer, but when I look at Windows Explorer or do a search for *.dot on the entire drive, I don't see the files listed by the names that they have in Word's template windows.

How are customized templates stored on Word 2000? Which file or files would I need to copy to export them to another computer that has Word 2000 on it?

Thanks!

Bill B.

You state "customized" templates. These are your own files you created, and saved with a .dot extenstion? If so, then they should have the same name.

Yes, I created them but cannot find them under the names that appear in the template windows.

When I moved from Word 97 to Word 2000 a couple years ago, I noticed that there seemed to be a difference in the way that Word handles newly made templates, almost as though they were being embedded somewhere. In Word 97 they were easy to see.

This is one dependant on the Operating system. in Windows XP the standard templates are stored C:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates. This is a hidden folder, You need to let Explorer show hidden folders and search hidden folders to find them

Thanks, Irish1957. Very helpful. Who would've thunk they'd be in such an obscure place!

It's not really obscure: it is YOUR Windows profile. Your customisations get saved there. Another user logging into the same computer logs into their own profile so that they can get their customisations and not yours. So it is actually a logical location!

If you look in Tools, Options, on the File Locations tab, you can specify a folder for your custom (user) templates.
