When to order phone service?

We have a client moving into a new building. When do you guys usually order phone service? Can we do it as soon as drywall/taping is done, or do we have to wait for an inspection etc.?

Ordering phone service from the Telco you mean? Generally there is a bit of a lead time from the Telco, i've seen a 7-10 day committment for new service. Also, if it is a new building, of course you need to coordinate with the engineers and make sure the conduits are in and the entrance cables. Generally when we deal with the telcos on new construction, it is two different departments; one for the entrance cable, one for delivering the telephone service when your cable is in.

If the customer is moving their existing lines I like to schudle dual service about a week ahead of time
with the lines active in both locations it makes the move a whole lot easier and allows phone coverage to be continuos and if the mave date has to go forward or bck a day or two no big deal

In either case new lines or moving existing I like to see the lines active at least a week before the move date just in case there are telco cabling issues.

Beilevce me Ive been there when the custmer requests the lines activated the day of the move and the telco guy comes in and says "cabling probelm sorry ,I have to turn it over to engineering they will contact you next week"

meantime the movers and moving his furnioture into the new building

Thanks guys. They are getting new numbers so its not really a move. Since the wiring closet is in the middle of the building im sure there will be a need for conduit.

When you talk about the engineering department you mean from the phone company correct? Not the general contractor? Time to give them a call.

if there is a outside cable problem then it has to go to telco engineering dept for a fix

I have been on site the day of the move when the customer choose to handle the telco themselves and had the telco installer come in and say he didnt have the cable pairs to install all (or evan some )of the lines

dosnt happen often but it is something to consider as I said earlier if I am involved I like to see the lines installed 7-10 days before the move `that way no surprises.

A lot has to do with the providor you are using.
You should work on getting the order in as far in advance as possible, theat way if they have engineering work to do they can get it done. The actual install can then be scheduled. This you would want to happen after they can access the area where the demark is to be located, and before the time you need to use it. The install to the demark and the service activation don't always have to be at the same time, they might be able to get the install done months ahead of service activation.

Well I ordered the service. I told them I wanted brought into the janitors closet in the middle of the building. After the install I went and looked for it and found they installed it to the outside of the building. I called and they said that was the DEMARC (sp?).

They want to charge $85 + 25 every 15 minutes to run the cable into the closet. What should I do? I thought they would install it to where I wanted?

at this point either you run a feeder cable or pay them to do it

since its a new building they are going to establish a demarc where the builder provisioned for it with conduit in from the street

Check the plans and with the builder. If they provided conduit to the telco room (janitors closet) and that is where you requested the dmark then go to the telco and complain. If the location where it got installed was where the conduit ran and this was not on the plans the builder may have to spring for the cost. This is why it pays to be on top of the work in progress.
