When Exporting to Excel - I lose the values in my field

I have a report which has fields with calculations that determine the value and fields with variables which assign a value.
When I export this report into excel I lose the values for the fields that are based on variables (what it displays in the cells is zero '0'), however I see my values for the fields that are based on formula's.
When I export this report into pdf I see all my values OK.
Has anyone every come across this problem before?
I am using crystal pro 8.5 and running Window XP on my machine and have tried exporting to all different versons of Excel and also Extended versions.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
