Opteron/Athlon64/Hammer/K8 is the only 64 bit architecture that I recognize on the list. Isn't the Xeon a descendant of the Opteron?

itanic /itanium was the true 64 bit intel chip.

"The Intel® Xeon™ processor with 800 MHz system bus supports Intel® Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel® EM64T) as an enhancement to Intel's IA-32 architecture."

They have added some 64 bit extensions to the xeon, but it was designed as an IA-32 bit processor.

I haven't had much success using it on
smp kernels using selections other than PII
compat. YMMV.
The hyperthreading(which is causing the confusion here)
is interesting. I'm not sure I'm seeing all the benefits
of it however. Using a 4 xeon equipped board == 8 logical
processors.

most Xeons are 32bit cpus (same as p4 but more cache) only the newer Xeons are 64bit capable.
as for which cpu to choose, i would go with marsd, he seems to know what he is talking about.
