Hi,
I am ready to split my database, but need some guidance.
I want to allow each user to have the FE on their pc and have the BE on the server. How do I create the shortcut on the user's pc so that they will connect to the tables on the BE? Could you give me an example of how the shortcut would read?
Is there a better process than what I'm addressing here?

Thanks.

If you have not split it yet copy the one database and give it a different name. Ex: I have RMA.mdb and RMA_Data.mdb.
From the one you want to be FE delete all the tables.
From the one you want to be BE delete everything BUT the tables.
From the FE use the File menu and select:
Get External Data -> Link Tables
Browse to your BE and select all the tables.
DON'T browse using a mapped drive. Start with My Network Places -> Entire Network and then all the way down.
Try it out and if it works ***make a backup copy*** of your FE.
From the original FE from the Tools menu select:
Database utilities -> Make MDE file.
An MDE file is just the database without any of the editable code. It is much smaller and users can't get to any of the Design portions in that database.

Kat25,

Backup, Backup, Backup.
You can never have too many backups, I speak from personal experience.

PinkEater,

I have quite a few split databases and link the tables through the mapped drives. I had never thought to link them through My Network Places. Other than someone not having the correct drive mapped on their computer and not able to access the back end, why do you suggest doing this?

Just curious.

Thanks.

Kat25, Just for the reason you mentioned. So the user doesn't have to map a drive. Some of my users aren't to computer savey. ;-)

PinkEater, I understand what you are saying regarding My Network. Thanks for that tip. I'm sure some of my users will not have the same drive letter mapped to the server.
I believe MKOV was asking about that.

Thanks for the prompt reply and the help. Hopefully, one day I won't be such a novice.

Happy Holiday!
