If you get the 'desciption' file from fix central for the p690 from :
and make sure you read, understand and follow it to the letter then you won't have any problems. I've updated many pSeries machines and never had problems.

Make sure your HMC is at the correct level. It is worth calling your planned upgrade in to IBM, and a CE can perform a checklist. Last p670 FW upgrade we did was joint effort - customer/IBM CE.
Not sure on FW upgrade responsibility for p690/p670 - IBM or customer?
