i would like to get a faster processor but i don't want to pay for a new motherboard

Howdy:

Doesn't matter what would be the easiest or even to price compare unless your motherboard can handle it..

Suggest you search your mobo first to see if you can even go higher than an 850. THEN you can start comparing prices..

Post your motherboard model and version on this site or look on the motherboard manufactures website.
If you have a later socket A board it may well take an XP upto the 2.1+ (palemino) but will almost definately need a bios flash to recognise this faster speed.

how do i find out what kind of motherboard I have?

BIOS should give you some numbers when it boots, write them down. also look at the board, it will have information you can use to identify the board. (an FCC number can be looked up at the FCC site. Run diagnostic software that will give you info. Ask the company where you bought the computer.

where do I look for these numbers for the bios, what do I do with them, and where on the motherboard can i find the FCC ID?

the diagnostic program says i have a "S (Sockey-A)". could someone tell me wha that means, and if I could iinstall an Athlon XP2100 on it? also, where would i get the bios update for "AMIBIOS 06271"
