I'm just curious..
Like on a CDROM or something, what the heck is a buffer and what does it do? "tis better to remain silent and be thought of as a fool..
then open your mouth and remove all doubt" Mark Twain

"I should of been a doctor.." Me

A temporary storage area for data, often used to "smooth out" incoming audio or video streams. Several seconds worth of material is stored in the buffer and it is then played back from there, so that if there is a brief interruption in the stream your music or whatever doesn't stop.

Do you still want to be a doctor?

Hi Phil!

My explanation;

A buffer is a place in-between 2 points.

Position A, Buffer, Position B.

It's like walking off the street into a restraunt. If the Restraunt isn't doing much you go straight through the reception (buffer area) and into the restraunt. If the place is busy you are kept waiting at at the buffer point until the first table becomes available.

That is what a buffer is in PC terms - A place were data is stored to allow best use of the printer, cd-writer etc.

Does that make sense?

Regards. Booting your machine seldom does it any favours.

Rather than writing directly to the CD...the data is first written to the buffer...and fed to the CD in gulps it can handle. (this is internal to the CDRW)
Buffer underrun is when the buffer becomes empty...there's a bottleneck somewhere in the system that let it run out of data. (like other apps that got in the way of the transfer)

wow.. great explanation guys...it's clear now...

Can you eplain Dirty Cache Buffers??? :-?

Crusty: of course I still wanna be a doctor.. who doesn't lol

You need to open your computer case and check:
the buffer cover may have gotten dislodged and is letting "dust mice" in! LOL

Naw, I'd just hazard a guess that there's data there that can't be read so it's judged as corrupt or "dirty".

It's data held in the cache that is destined to be written to the HDD but it hasn't happened as yet. Error! Keyboard not attached. Press F1 to continue

From a Google search:
"Dirty Cache Buffers - this value indicates the number of cache buffers containing information that has been changed. These buffers are waiting to be written to disk. If the number of Dirty Cache buffers equals over 70 percent of the total number of cache buffers (Total Cache Buffers value), increase the "Maximum Concurrent Disk Cache Writes" using the SET parameter."

Please come back and let us know if your
problem is fixed and what fixed it!! [thumbsup2]

Thanks, Phil, for righting me...learned some more today.
(AND guessed totally wrongly!)

ok.. I checked my cache buffer cover.. It was way open, so I changed the proccessor's oil and lubbed up my dimm slots.. after wiping off my motherboard with a wool sweater and buffing it with a piece of carpet it's runs like a champ!!! My power supply is really dirty though...I'll just put that in the washing machine tomorrow though..
Thanks

n o kidding

for a power supply? "tis better to remain silent and be thought of as a fool..

I got flamed on another newsgroup when I laughed at someone suggesting that.

He turned out to be an operating engineer at a power plant and after pushing the plate of crow I'd earned at me, pointed out the method of cleaning out very large power supplies.
Said of course you want to let it dry out well before turning on the juice. (like weeks)
Don't do it too soon: let the capacitor bleed down inside the unit.
Some even suggested the foamy stuff you see in car washes where you can use it under the hood.
No, I don't personally go to this length, but there are lots out there that do.

The dishwasher actually works great for those old 3.5 floppy drives that get really dirty. You need to take the covers off though, and I've always done it without soap. Last thing you need is some soap scum on your drive. And it takes a couple of days to dry. 1001100 1110101 1101011 1100101

If you guys are serious I'll eat my mobo!
