What speed is my RAM?

My dad just bought a new laptop from HP. Strangely, they never said how fast the memory was, just that it was a gig of DDR. I tried looking in the BIOS, but it wouldn't even let me overclock at all so I couldn't see it that way, and it didn't show the memory speed anywhere else. I thought it might say on the first boot screen, but it loads so fast I can't even read it. How can I figure out how fast my memory is?

what speed is the processor? 533 fsb its probably pc2700, 800 fsb probably pc3200. call up their tech support and have them check based on the serial number

>> 1. Why do you care?
Mostly for future reference. When I build a computer some time in the future, I want to have an idea of the performance gain I'll be getting. If I know what I have now, I'll have a better idea of the performance gain of getting DDR2-800 (it should be out by the time I build a new computer).

It's got an 800MHz FSB, but you can never trust an OEM like HP to give you the best memory your CPU can handle if there is something cheaper they could use instead. That's one of the reasons I'm curious to see the speed: I want to know if they were cheap or not.

Can you take a look at the RAM itself? There could be a make or part number on it that you could look up on the net.

if you had bought a dell you could look it up by the system id and it will display what was in it when you bought it.
not sure if HP does that.

if it's an 800 fsb I would say there's about a 95% chance it's pc3200

If you are going to build your own computer comparing it to a laptop isn't going to tell you much. The laptops have performance hits that aren't related to memory. Get this utility if you want to see how your memory is working

Give us the model number of the laptop. Unless it was customly configured before purchase, the model should tell us the basic specs by doing a simple google search on it. And if for some reason it was custom configured, the person who did so (your father) should know what he specified.
